My research uses molecular and microscopic methods to classify protist assemblages in the Columbia River, its estuary, and its plume. In particular, I study the heterotrophic flagellate Katablepharis that 'blooms' in the estuary during the spring. I am characterizing its spatial and temporal distribution throughout the coastal margin via the use of specific molecular probes; as well as determining the role of Katablepharis and other heterotrophic and mixotrophic protists in the estuarine food web through bacterivory and herbivory studies.
