Week 5: Progress so far

This has been rather a disjointed week. The Fourth of July was on a Monday this year, so the week was four days long. This was further complicated by the fact that the sinks and autoclaves were broken for a few days, which limited what we could do. In spite of this, we were able to get some good work done! We analyzed the results from our trial run of FISH last week, and have some good ideas about how the procedure can be optimized. We will probably be trying several concentrations of SDS, and a higher concentration of DAPI (a dye that stains DNA) during this next run.

The interns will be presenting their progress so far on Monday, so I spent a good part of last week writing that powerpoint. It is always difficult trying to condense several weeks of work into a few slides. It was helpful to look over what I have done so far though, as it gives me a clearer idea of what I should try to accomplish during the last half of this internship.
