School year update & Summer 2009 I'm Back!
Last year after completing the ASE program I was fortunate enough to be offered a part time job during the school year in the lab with Tawyna and Joe. I usually came in from 3-5 hours a week prepping for cruises and working on data organization/analysis involving the CDOM samples that I had worked with the previous summer. Then I was offered the opportunity to come back again this summer as a full time student through ASE. So far it has been very nice because I'm so familiar with the lab and I can be a lot more self sufficient than last year.
My first week I met all of the new undergrads who I am very excited to be working with again this year; they all have so much knowledge and give great advice. I also began working with the recent cruise CDOM samples. I am running samples completely different this year. Instead of using the small fluorometer which just measures the energy produced when the molecules are fluoresced I am using the Spectrofluorometer (the Fluoumax-4 aka "the pest") which gives a more detailed reading of the makeup of the molecules. Eventually after running the 200 samples (right now I’m getting about 15 done a day) I will be able to sit down and use a data analysis program to help further the focused study in our lab. I am looking forward to learning a lot more this summer and I can't wait to see where it takes me in my future.
also, below is a picture my schools' yearbook page "student jobs" I'm in the upper right corner working in the lab while everyone else on the two pages are working at fast food places. I'm proud to be in the yearbook for that =)
