Week 1

What a week! So on Monday I met all my new colleagues: the mentors and the other interns. I was really excited to meet my mentors: Tawnya and Michelle, along with all the others in my lab.
After some preliminary background reading we got to work preparing media to grow cryptophyte algae in. We also worked on isolating the cryptophytes which is still in progress. On Thursday we took a surprise field trip to Hayden Island to collect some new samples from the Columbia River; we found some cryptophytes in them in addition to some fungus that Michelle has been working with for a while and was featured in the Oregonian a day or two ago. So needless to say it has been a good exciting week.
