last day of week 2

this week has gone by pretty fast!! im surprised on how fast it was. it was a week full of work, hahaha. ya i finished my paper on hypoxia, well not really finished but i turned it in. it was hard to find the second part on if the oregon and washington coast  is experiencing hypoxia. im not veery good/fond of research, but im getting used ot it i guess. yesterday antonio introduced us to our group project. i will be working with matt on creating a visual on cdom and temperature in the plume and estuary. its gonna be a challenge!!

July 2, 2009

After researching wind-driven circulation, we started to look at hypoxia. After finishing our reports on hypoxia, we recieved a new assignment that is much more extensive. The four of us are going to be researching four water quality parameters in the estuary and plume, temperature, salinity, CDOM, and fluorescence. We've been split into two sub groups, myself and Alma, and Monica and Maria. Alma and I will be focusing on temperature and CDOM, while Monica and Maria focus on salinity and fluorescence.

WEEK 4

This week I began using my new primer, however to my disappointment I haven't had any results. Today I tried out many different concentrations of the DNA template so we will see if this makes a difference!

WEEK 4

Week 4 for me has been rather interesting, because I have now reached the stage where I am making scripts in Python for Google Earth. Since this is my first time using Python, I found it to be quite difficult, because it is indeed different from many programming languages that I have used before. It is a good thing that I have taken a class of Data Structures before, where now I can see where that comes into relation with Python. I started my week by installing the Apache server to my laptop. After I was done with that, I installed Python and then the modules (mod-python).

WEEK 4

My fourth week interning at CMOP has really gone by fast. So far my time has been spent working on extracting DNA samples which I can proudly say was completed on tuesday afternoon. It was also really good to see that there were concentrations of DNA present in each which appeared after running an electrophoresis gel.

week 2 *gettin there*

well its the middle of my second week and im still getting used to things. i kind of understand what were doing as interns and what my job is. I'm getting along well with the other interns, they are really nice. = ) i see how CMOP is a very organized and put together place but they are also very kind and compassionate. i think the only complication I've had is getting here because something always goes wrong with the bus or the max. but that's whatever. im currently working on a paper on hypoxia and the Oregon and Washington coast. what is hypoxia, and is the coast at jeopardy??

Week 3

Week 3! Time is flying by. I can’t believe that I’ve already been here for 3 weeks! I spent a lot of time this week behind the computer doing literature searches. It turns out that there is a much better way to make the electrode than the current PDE we have been using to study manganese dioxide. The materials should be here next week and I should get more comparable results for electrochemical characterization using the new electrode.

Week 3- Bonneville Dam visit

Vanessa planned a great trip to the dam for us which I hadn't visited since the 4th grade! On the way there we got to stop at crown point and multnomah falls and take pictures and walk around. Crown point was really cool because I had never been inside the building there and there were big exhibits with tons of old photos which showed the development of the highway that runs along the gorge and other neat attractions.

WEEK 5 (2009)

I am just over halfway done with my internship! I can't believe how quickly it flies by...

I spent the beginning of week 5 running PCRs and purifying the PCR products from B.pacifica. Now I have a few tubes ready to be utilized in cloning, a process that will allow us to sequence the bacterial genes present in B.pacifica to make sure E.sertula exists in this organism.

Research Cruise Video Blog

Jeff Cruise VideosLast summer I went on a research cruise aboard the R/V Wecoma. The project was to capture the human factor about working and living at sea. Each day I would shoot, edit, and then uploaded videos to our web site from the ship. I have compiled all the videos in one place for you to watch.
