13 Sep 2008 - R/V Wecoma (W0809B) - Leg 1

Safety talk conducted at 0910.
Left the Newport dock promptly at 0955 and headed for NH-10.

Straightaway after lunch mooring recovery operations began. First pass by buoy (named Alder) resulted in breaking anemometer with ship's crane hook. Second pass was successful. Crane lifted Alder buoy and set it on deck, draping the mooring wire over the starboard side. The buoy was secured and the mooring wire disconnected from buoy. The load of the mooring wire was transferred to the trawl wire and fed through the A-frame. All instruments and the anchor were successfully recovered.

the end came so fast!

My 8 weeks have come to an end. It seems like it went by so fast! I got really busy, sorry for no weekly updates.
Towards the end I worked a lot in MatLab comparing how different salinity levels can affect diatoms (using a previous study from J.Needoba)
The over all conclusion:
-Salinity affects growth of diatom
-CDOM release increased as salt water was added to fresh water phytoplankton
-However, No effect on July Salinity experiment

Week 10 - last day!

Wow. It's weird to think this is my last day. Ten weeks in is practically nothing for research! Now I definitely understand why phD's take so long...and why the time it takes can vary so much! This post has nothing to do with my research--if you want to know about it, look at my powerpoint from the previous post. I'm going to try to sum up my overall impression from the summer.

Week 9 wrapping up!

This week has been preparing for presentations and developing standard addition techniques for my electrodes to be used as sensors!

It's so sad that everyone's leaving! I'll be all by myself for the next week as I attempt to hurriedly wrap up my research and hopefully make some fantastic breakthroughs!

But for now, here's my presentation below in case you're interested in what I've been actually doing all summer. I'll be presenting today in about an hour. Hopefully I'll be able to tie all the loose ends next week though!

Final Summer Blog

Last blog, sad.

Well, I’m giving my final presentation today, finishing my papers, and packing up. It’s strange that essentially my summer is complete. I start Willamette in two weeks, ah! Hurray for senior year.

So, I have attached my final presentation in ppt form.

Enjoy

Week 10

Well, I think it is safe to say I'm not a blogger. Out of 10 weeks I've blogged for about half of them. Sorry, Vanessa. You can read about what I've been up to in my final report though (which I am about to send in). :)

Week 10

My last week at CMOP was great. Everything went according to plan as far as my paper and presentation go. We did have to make a few last minute changes on the day of presentations, but then again who doesn't? Even though I was the first to present, I wasn't nervous at all. I was completely confident in my work and all the effort I put into it. The past 9 weeks have been full of excitement and discoveries for me and I wouldn't change anything. I'm definitely going to miss all the new friends I made here and I will be sure to keep in touch!!!

Below are some links to my works:

GOOOOODBYEEEE EVERYONEEE!!!

Hello everyone...Can you believe it, our 8 weeeks are up? Sometimes it feels like I just started yesterday and other times I feel like I'v been here my whole life! Wow, this has been such an amazing, awesome experience, I seriously wouldn't change it for anything ;]. It has been such a pleasure to work with such awesome, smart people (shout outs to Matthew, Monica, Nirzwan, Grant, Karen, Antonio...the list goes on!)

Week 9

This week I worked on my paper and presentation. Bill and I had a system: I would work on one portion of the paper, email it to him and he would edit it while I worked on the next portion of the paper. It worked out great and Bill's feedback helped a lot.
