I am attending a C-MORE/MBARI EARTH Workshop this week. Everything is going well. All is very interesting and wonderful to meet such enthusiastic people. There are teachers here who have been to workshops for several years and those new like me. There are people from all over, including SMILE at OSU, Texas, Woodshole, North Carolina, Pittsburg, LA, etc.

Last night the lecture on apoxia was super with lots of data and a Powerpoint to show in class. This morning we did a lab to show how having a lack of organic phosphorus causes dinoflagelates to produce an enzyme that will allow them to process inorganic phosphorus - making the dinoflagelate fluoresce. It would be difficult to do in the classroom without expensive enzymes, and microscopes. So we'll probably talk to figure out how to adapt it.

We went to the wave tank at OSU today. And the tour guide gave us a Powerpoint on Tsunamis. It is located on the EARTH website under the wave tank. http://www.mbari.org/earth/2008/schedule.htm Or at least it would be there by tomorrow. There should be a place that has notes as well. There are some cool little animations that are great for showing how an earthquake starts the wave action.
